App Design & Development Case Studies

App design and development is the discipline of building the software people carry with them — native mobile apps, companion apps for connected products, spatial apps, and the platforms behind them.

ANML has spent more than a decade designing and building apps, from Yummly, which reached 5 million downloads and a 4.8-star App Store rating, to BILT's spatial app for Apple Vision Pro. Our work spans consumer, fintech, AI wellness, and B2B platform apps, as well as the companion apps for Whirlpool, KitchenAid, JennAir, and Brunswick products, and covers strategy, UX and UI design, design systems, and development.

Apps are judged in public. Every release lands in App Store ratings, first-session onboarding decides whether someone comes back, and each platform — iOS, Android, visionOS — has its own conventions to respect. The case studies below show how we have handled those constraints, from MVP definition and redesigns of core flows to design systems that engineering teams can ship across platforms.

FAQ

What does app design and development include?

App design and development covers everything between an idea and an app people keep using: product strategy, user research, information architecture, UX and UI design, prototyping, design systems, development, and launch assets such as App Store screenshots and preview videos. ANML scopes each engagement to the part of that path a team needs help with. Learn more about ANML's digital product design services.

Does ANML design and build apps, or only design them?

Both. ANML has handled development as well as design on projects such as Yummly, Brunswick, and Olliv. On others, including KitchenAid, JennAir, and Whirlpool, we designed alongside the client's own engineering teams and delivered design systems and specs built to be implemented across releases.

What kinds of apps has ANML designed?

Consumer apps (Yummly), companion apps for connected products (Whirlpool, KitchenAid, JennAir, Yummly Thermometer, Brunswick), spatial apps for Apple Vision Pro (BILT), fintech (Olliv), AI wellness (Umi by PanasonicWell), and B2B platforms and portals (Nokē, OrthoFX Doctor Portal). The common thread is products where the app is the main way a customer experiences the brand.

Do you design for iOS, Android, and Apple Vision Pro?

Yes. We design to each platform's conventions rather than forcing one layout everywhere, and build a shared design system so iOS, Android, and web stay consistent as the product grows. For BILT, ANML extended a mobile and tablet app into a spatial experience for Apple Vision Pro, which was featured in Apple retail store demos.

How do you measure whether an app redesign worked?

App Store ratings and reviews are the most public scorecard, alongside retention, task completion, and support volume. Yummly reached 5 million downloads with a 4.8-star average App Store rating, and Whirlpool credits ANML with helping take its apps to ratings above 4 stars.

How long does an app design project take?

A focused engagement, such as redesigning a core flow or defining an MVP, typically runs 10–16 weeks. A full app with a design system and development typically runs 6–12 months, depending on platforms and release cadence. ANML scopes each engagement to the next release and the decisions the team needs to make, not a fixed template.
